FLL North Runway Rehabilitation

The project comprised of the rehabilitation of the North Airfield Pavements, the EMAS Beds and the reconstruction of North Runway 10L-28R.

LOCATION: Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood Airport owner: Broward County Aviation Department -and- General Asphalt contract: $6.6 Million Dollars


Our scope consisted of the replacement of the entire asphalt keel section of the runway with concrete, reconstruction of various taxiway connectors, reconstruction of the existing EMAS Beds, and relocation of Taxiway B West, the rehabilitation of Taxiway A West, and the relocation of Taxiway D and Taxiway T2.


The earthwork component included over 80,000 cubic yards of excavation, 160,000 square yards of clearing and grubbing, 221,000 square yards of compacted subgrade, and 81,000 square yards of lime rock base.


Due to the heavy rains in South Florida and the flat landscape of the field the airport was built on, we had to install some complicated drainage improvements such as 1,500 LF of drainage pipe, 14,000 LF of pipe cleaning and inspection, as well as the installation of 8 aircraft rated drainage structures and a cast in place trench drain.


Subcontractor management of the project was challenging with addition of FAA Facility modification that required a medium intensity approach lighting system with Runway Alignment Indicator Lights and Runway Status Lights. Since this was a very active airport the runway had a tight timeline that could not exceed the closure of the runway for more than 120 days. We were able to complete the project within the timetable given even with the delays of the heavy rains experienced during the project.
